The Republic of India occupies most of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. It is bordered by China to the northeast, Pakistan to the west, Nepal and Bhutan to the north, and Burma and Bangladesh to the east.
The country is divided into three distinct geographical regions: the Himalayan region in the north, which contains some of the highest mountains in the world; the Gangetic Plain and Plateau region in the south and central parts. Its three major river systems, the Ganges, the Indus and the Brahmaputra, have extensive deltas, all rising into the Himalayas.
