Egypt, in the northeast corner of Africa on the Mediterranean Sea, is bordered to the west by Libya, to the south by Sudan, and to the east by the Red Sea and Israel. About the size of the city of Texas in the United States, Egypt is divided into two uneven and extremely arid regions by the dominant feature of the landscape, the north-flowing Nile River. The Nile begins 100 miles (161 km) south of the Mediterranean and opens out into a 155-mile waterfront between the cities of Alexandria and Port Said.
